SEO for accountants: fewer tactics, more clients

Hands arranging and annotating a sequence of planning cards

SEO for accountants is making sure that when a business owner or individual searches for the accounting help you offer, in Google or in an AI assistant like ChatGPT, your practice is one of the firms they find and trust. The work that moves the needle is narrow: a dedicated page for each service and each type of client you want more of, a complete Google Business Profile with reviews, named advisers with visible qualifications, and consistent listings on professional body directories. Everything else is secondary.

The top-ranking guides for this term list 16 or 21 strategies. I understand why. But a two-partner practice cannot do 21 things well, and does not need to.

Why do most accountancy websites struggle in search?

Because they are built around the firm, not the buyer. The typical site has a homepage, an "About us", a single "Services" page listing bookkeeping, payroll, VAT, tax returns, management accounts and advisory in one scroll, and a contact page.

That structure has two problems.

  1. It cannot rank for specific searches. Someone searching "accountant for landlords" or "R&D tax credit accountant" wants a page about exactly that. A list item on a services page rarely beats a dedicated page.
  2. It gives AI assistants nothing to quote. When ChatGPT or Google's AI features answer a question, they cite passages that answer it directly. A bullet point that says "Tax planning" does not.

Which clients do you actually want more of?

Start here, before any SEO work. In most practices some client types are more profitable and easier to serve than others, and capacity is limited.

Pick two or three client groups: contractors, landlords, dentists, e-commerce sellers, construction firms, charities, owner-managed businesses at a certain size. Then build your search presence around them. A page called "Accountants for dental practices" with specific, knowledgeable content will outperform a generic page, and will bring in clients who already know you understand their world.

This is also where most of the ranking opportunity sits. Broad terms like "accountant [city]" are competitive. Niche terms usually are not.

What should each service page include?

Section Purpose
A direct answer in the first two sentences Tells the reader you do this, for whom, and what they get
Who the service is for The client types and situations it suits
What is included Deliverables, deadlines you handle, software you work with
Who does the work Named adviser, qualifications (ACA, ACCA, CTA, CPA and so on), experience
Common questions Taken from real enquiries, answered plainly and accurately
Sources Links to HMRC or IRS guidance where you state rules or thresholds
Next step What happens after they get in touch

Two notes. First, tax rules change, so every page that states a threshold or deadline needs a review date and an owner. Second, link to the official source. It helps readers check you, and the GEO research presented at KDD 2024 found that citing sources was among the most effective ways to make a page more visible in AI-generated answers.

How does local SEO work for an accountancy practice?

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence includes links and reviews. In its words: "More reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking."

For an accountancy firm, that means:

  • A complete Google Business Profile for each office, with the most specific accurate categories and every service listed.
  • Reviews from clients that mention the service or sector ("sorted our landlord tax return", "helped us through our first VAT return").
  • A replied-to review for every review.
  • Your firm listed accurately in your professional body's directory, and any sector directories relevant to your niches.

How do accountants show up in AI answers?

Increasingly, clients ask ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode questions like "do I need an accountant as a sole trader?" or "which accountants in Bristol specialise in contractors?". The answers name firms and cite pages.

The route in is straightforward:

  1. Let the crawlers in. OpenAI's documentation says sites that block OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers". Check your robots.txt.
  2. Be eligible in Google. Google says there are no additional requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
  3. Write answer-first. The first two sentences of each page should be something an AI tool could quote accurately.
  4. Be described the same way everywhere. If your site says "specialist accountants for landlords" and your directory listing says "general practice", the AI has conflicting signals.

We cover this in more depth in our companion post on marketing for accountants and on our accountants page.

What should accountants measure?

Not traffic on its own. Pew Research found that people click traditional results much less often when Google shows an AI summary (8% of visits versus 15% without). Informational pages such as "what expenses can a sole trader claim?" will get fewer clicks even as they get cited more.

Measure the things that pay:

  • Enquiries by service and client type
  • Enquiries that became engagements
  • Annual fee value of those engagements, counted by the practice
  • Where each new client says they found you
  • How often you are named in AI answers for your niche questions

From our work

Buyers phrase the same need in different ways. When we looked at an accountancy firm in the South West in September 2026, it was 5th for one version of its main local search but 14th and 16th for two other versions that together get more searches every month. Same people, same need, different words. Its estimated search visits had also fallen from 243 in April to 56 in August. One page that covered all three phrasings naturally would fix most of it.

What we'd do in your first 30 days

  • Week 1: choose the two or three client types to grow. List 10 questions each group asks before choosing an accountant. Run them in Google, ChatGPT and AI Mode, and note who is named.
  • Week 2: check crawler access and indexing. Fix your Google Business Profile categories and services. Check your professional body directory listing.
  • Week 3: build or rewrite one page per chosen client type, using the table above. Add named advisers and official sources.
  • Week 4: add "how did you hear about us?" to every enquiry route, start a simple review request after each year-end, and agree how new engagements are counted each month.

Checklist

  • Two or three target client types chosen
  • One dedicated page per service and per target client type
  • Answer first, sources linked, review date on every page
  • Named advisers with qualifications
  • Google Business Profile complete, reviews mention the service
  • Professional body directory listing accurate
  • OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt
  • Enquiries and engagements tracked by source

FAQ

How long does SEO take for an accountancy firm?

Niche pages in a moderately competitive area can start to bring enquiries within a few months. Broad city terms take longer. Local profile fixes can show faster.

Should accountants blog?

Yes, if each post answers a question your target clients ask and links to the relevant service page. Deadline reminders and budget round-ups are fine for existing clients but rarely win new ones.

Is it worth targeting a niche?

In my experience, yes. It is easier to rank, easier to be cited in AI answers and easier to convert, because the client can see you know their situation.

What about paid search?

It can fill gaps while organic work builds. But for most practices, a small number of excellent niche pages is the better long-term investment.
